Conway Is One of the Oldest Cities in South Carolina

Most travelers to the Grand Strand do not have Conway on their radar. Conway is generally a pass through town on the way to the beach. This is unfortunate because there are a few places that make Conway a little different than some of the other cities along the Grand Strand. If you don’t want to stay in Conway, don’t rule it out as a place to visit. Conway is on the National Register of Historic places.

There are at least 31 historic sites that are listed. Being one of the oldest cities in South Carolina there is a lot of history to uncover in this small city. Conway has an estimated population of 32,795 as of July 2017. The county seat for Horry County is located there. If you like history and architecture Conway will be a joy to visit. It houses some amazing landmarks

Conway is home to Coastal Carolina University with a population of 9,917 undergraduate students. The school offers 73 baccalaureate degrees in major fields of study. Students who attend Coastal Carolina University have the best of both worlds, small town feel of downtown Conway and the excitement of living 15 minutes from a major resort area where they can feel like every day is a vacation.

Get the small town feeling by taking a walk through the historic district of Conway. Main Street is where most of the action starts. You will find a few great restaurants and unique mom and pop shops along with some really historic buildings.

If you are looking for some good eats try the Rivertown Bistro, a great farm to table experience. After a great meal why not try a tasty dessert at the Trestle Bakery and Café which also serves food. Lastly if you are into craft beers check out the Crafty Rooster.

Interested in a cultural experience? Why not check out an exhibit at the Horry County Museum or absorb yourself in a theatre production at the Theatre of the Republic or visit the Wheelwright Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University.

Lastly be sure to experience the Riverwalk. Take a stroll along the path and enjoy the view of the Waccamaw River. You will find a peaceful place to take a break from all the touristy attractions of the Grand Strand. If you love festivals, be sure to check your calendar for events that happen throughout the year along the walk.
