Garden City, South Carolina – An Unofficial City with Big Personality

Garden City borders Surfside Beach to the south. Ironically the population in this city is much larger than Surfside but this city is not incorporated and therefore does not have a mayor or city council. It is a great place to raise a family due to the low cost of living. It is also a quiet town as its neighbor to the north Surfside Beach. Families in tow with children flock to the area. The area has a population of about 9500.

This is not a town with loads of activity aside from it’s great pier community. It is has nice beaches and is pretty quiet. If you are looking for more action you are not far from Myrtle Beach which is of course is the main attraction on the Grand Strand.

The highlight of Garden City would be its pier. The pier itself does not have all the activity as its next door neighbor Surfside. However, it has been rated as one of best piers on the Grand Strand at one time or another. The location of the city gives it access to the Atlantic Ocean and the inlet which makes it a prime spot for crabbing, fishing, and other watersports. People vacationing here will also love the annual golf parade on July 4th.

On the pier you will find a tackle shop, arcade, the Pier Café, and a pier side bar with a great drink menu. It is also an area where many come to fish. A couple of factoids that most may not be aware of, this town was almost totally obliterated in 1954 by Hurricane Hazel. The damage was so severe it left only two houses stand. Unfortunately, again in 1989 it was struck by Hurricane Hugo and the pier was totally destroyed.

If you are looking for a place to chill and enjoy magnificent views you will enjoy Garden City. It is known for its pristine beaches and amazing views.
