Little River is a Small City with a Few Historical Gems

Little River is one of the 10 major cities that comprise what is known as the Grand Strand, an area along the coast of South Carolina. It is the furthest north of all the cities on the Grand Strand. It borders North Carolina. Little River does not get the same fanfare as some of the more well-known cities to the south known for their great restaurants, beaches and great entertainment such as Myrtle Beach, and others. Little River has a more laid back slower pace than the other cities comprising the Grand Strand.

Little River is a great small city, but do not be mistaken just because it not the first name to come to mind when thinking of a visit to the Grand Strand. The uniqueness of the Grand Strand is that there are several communities and this allows travelers to have several choices when making their vacation plans.

According to Wikipedia, Little River is known to be the first community in Horry County. It was first settled by Lewis’s, Waites, Vereen’s, and the Tilighman families. The community has bragging rights to having our founding father President George Washington, visiting and staying overnight with Jeremiah Vereen in his cabin. The last census report shows a population of approximately 8,960 with a median age of 56.

Why Visit Little River?

If you are looking forward to a laid back serene vacation where there is less traffic and away from the crowds but close enough to venture how when you want a little action then Little River may be perfect for destination for you. It’s about 20 miles south of Myrtle Beach which is considered the center of the Grand Strand and probably with the most tourist attractions. Little River is like having the best of both worlds.

There are many activities to enjoy this small city. Little River is home to the Blue Crab Festival. Every year in May and it is the biggest seafood festival in the Southeast. It’s a great time to rub shoulders with locals and enjoy local seafood. Sit back, relax and enjoy the views at a local restaurant on the waterfront or walk around, listen to music as you explore what local vendors have to offer.
