Myrtle Beach Is The Heart of The Grand Strand

Unlike the border cities to the left or the right, Myrtle Beach is the heart of the Grand Strand. It has the largest population of all the cities on the Grand Strand. Myrtle Beach has an approximate population of 32,240 as of July 2017 according to the U.S. census bureau and it continues to grow.

A Few Historic Tidbits About Myrtle Beach

In 1936 the city became an island because of a separation caused by the Intracoastal Waterway. There is evidence that some of the first residents of the area were the Withers family. They left the area after a devastating hurricane in 1822. The area remained uninhabited until Franklin Burroughs; an entrepreneur arrived in the late 1900’s. Franklin Burroughs had a vision to make Myrtle Beach a resort area. To this day, Burroughs/Chapin remains active in Myrtle Beach.
