Surfside Beach has a population of 4, 195, with the median age around 52 years old. It was one of the first places in South Carolina to place a smoking ban back in October of 2007. It is easy to comprehend why families are attracted to this area.

Since Surfside Beach is considered a family destination, it makes sense that it is an autism friendly beach. In fact, Surfside Beach is designated the only “Autism Friendly Beach” in the world. This is very impressive, as no other beach can claim this status. Families traveling to this area can feel a sense of belonging that is not afforded at any other destination. The highlight of Surfside Beach is the Surfside Pier. The pier is a great place to take a walk or enjoy one of the many restaurants or shops in the area. The Pier was damaged by Hurricane Mathew in 2016. It is open in some areas but closed to anyone who is interested in fishing.
